There is Beauty in Every Beast

In my Elective course, Ollywood, we have been learning about film production and how it works. Our first unit was Pre-production. Throughout this unit we have analyzed different films, such as jaws and Amélie, We created our own storyboards and we have learned how to critique a film the right way. For our Field Experience, we went to Lower Wacker, and took photos for a specific scene. By doing this, we were able to put ourselves in the perspective of a Location Scout. For this Action Project, I watched the 2017 Beauty and the Beast film. Take a look at what I discovered when I looked more into the movie.

There is Beauty in Every Beast

Beauty and the Beast, an American musical romantic fantasy was remade from Disney’s 1991 animated film. The remarkable cast with Emma Watson playing the lead role as “Belle”, Luke Evans as “Gaston” and Dan Stevens as “The Beast”. The film was directed by Bill Condon with screenplay lead by Stephen Chbosky and Evan Spiliotopoulos. Beauty and the Beast was released in the United States on March 17, 2017. After being released the film won many awards for its success. It received nominations at the 23rd Critic Choice Awards, 71st British Academy Film and at the 90th Academy awards it was nominated for Best Production Design and Best Costume.

At the beginning of the film a handsome prince is interrupted from a party with an unexpected intruder at the castle; it is an old woman seeking shelter from the cold storm. She offers the prince a single rose but he laughs at her and turns the woman away to be on her own. The woman warns him not to be deceived by appearances but the prince is too selfish to understand. The woman said, “Beauty is found within.” She then transforms him into an ugly beast. Everyone in the village forgets about him. The only way he will get rid of the spell is if he could learn to love another and earn their love in return before the last petal falls, but who would ever fall in love with a beast?

During the beginning of this film, the costumes and set design seem to match the overall theme of the movie. The castle is elegant and just what you’d imagine royalty would look like. From the big entrance, to the extravagant ballroom, it is what some would describe as perfect. The costumes inside the castle look fancy and expensive. The whole set expresses the prince’s personality very well. He is young and selfish, and he spends his money on expensive things.

Not too far from the castle was the small town of Villeneuve. Belle and her artist father live there. They moved to this “safe” village after she lost her mother. The town’s people have always thought of Belle as odd and different, but really she is just interested in more productive things. She loves reading books and showing off her intelligence. Other women in town spend their time focused on appearance and impressing men. Belle’s strong character is obvious throughout the film.

The village’s set design was just how I’d imagine a village would look like. It was rustic and old but seemed like a peaceful place to live. The tight knit community where everyone knows everyone has a sense of calmness to it. As for the costumes, Belle stayed dressed more casual than the other women wearing tight corsets. The men are all in french suits that give them a more proper look.

Gaston is a man in town that is in love with Belle. He tries to win her over by guilt tripping. He says, “This is our world Belle. For simple folks like us, it doesn’t get any better.'' Gaston is an antagonist in the film because of his determination to be with Belle. He causes lots of conflict throughout. Although it is clear to everyone Belle has no interest, he continues to fight for her. Gaston even goes to the extent of fighting with her father. Belle’s father is trying to find her but Gaston doesn’t believe a word being said, “You say beast one more time and I will feed you to the wolves!”

My favorite scene is when Belle and the Beast are in his room after Belle tried to escape. The dialogue between the two show both of their characters very accurately. They both keep a firm attitude but deep down they are scared. As Belle cleans his wounds after the fight, the Beast says, “Ow! That hurts.”   Belle replies, “Well, if you held still it wouldn’t hurt as much.'' The anger between the two of them starts to increase. The Beast states, “If you hadn’t run away, none of this would have happened.” Belle tries to defend her argument, “Well if you hadn’t frightened me, I wouldn’t have run away.” He then says, “Well you shouldn’t have been in the West Wing.”  And with one last remark Belle leaves it with, “Well you should learn to control your temper.”

The other protagonist in the film is the Beast. Not just because of his obvious change from a prince to a beast, but because his demeanor changed. In the beginning he did not want Belle to even say goodbye to her father. She said, “What kind of a cold-hearted man are you, not to allow me to say goodbye to my father?” Later in the film, after the two have developed a relationship, the Beast gives Belle the magic mirror to see her father. After she sees he is in trouble she says, “Papa, what are they doing to him; he is in trouble!” The Beast reluctantly says, “Well then you must go.” He lets her off free with no selfishness.
When Belle makes it back to town, she realizes nobody believes that there is a Beast. She pulls out the magic mirror and shows them proof that the Beast is not some made up fantasy. When the townspeople see the Beast in the mirror, they are so astonished. No one believed what her father had been saying. Gaston then catches on that Belle is in love with the Beast. This infuriates Gaston, so he leaves Belle locked up with her father while they try to find the Beast. Belle escapes and finds her way back to the castle. Gaston and the Beast are fighting. They both decide not to kill each other, but later when they reunite Gaston shoots the Beast, and Gaston ends up dying. At the same time the last petal falls and the Beast dies in Belles arms. The enchantress undoes the curse and everything goes back to normal except there is one thing that is different; The Beast is in love.

After watching the film, I realized how much I  didn’t notice when watching it before. Having a better idea about pre-production has allowed me to analyze movies better. I noticed the time period in which the movie was made and how the characters dressed and acted as if they were still living in 1991. Overall I enjoyed this movie a lot. I liked comparing the two movies.
